AND WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE FRUIT?

I hate picking figs!
First of all it's August and I should be on the beach relaxing with a good book and a glass of nice wine... Instead I'm stuck on top of some hill, tripping over stones, it's hot, they're sticky and their leaves make my skin quite itchy... The problem is -  they are one of my top five fruits.

Anyhow, I remember one April couple of years back (once upon of time, you might say)  while I was living in a nearby town I saw figs in a shop. It was early in the year and I wanted them badly. No picking and here they are, ready to eat, just perfect in shape... Oh my, oh my....  So I gave too much money for too few figs expecting that sweet and sticky taste of healthy fruit I adore.
I won't even try to describe the dissapointment I felt while tasting them.

And so, every year in August and September, I spend some time itching and swearing in the heat, tripping over stones and enjoying the pleasure of all the perfect fruits I can get.

Of course, you do not need to go trough all the trouble. Just stop by one of the locals who sell them (you'll recognize them by long lines of drying figs in front of their houses; mostly in villages around Marina)  and you'll get perfect taste of just picked fruit.
If you like dried figs (besides olive oil, Marina area is well known for dried figs), you can get the from the local cooperative. It's a 100% Marina product and I bet you'll love it.

FOOTBALL? NO, EVEN BETTER!

 Krpaš 2013 players and M.D.

In Marina, football as known today has its ancestor in a game called "Krpaš". The game was named after the ball sewn of rags (cro.krpa - eng.rag) and only two teams are allowed to play - Mala vrata and Vela vrata (names of two locations in Marina)...
For this occasion one of the narrow streets becomes a krpas-field and the only rule is that the players must play barefooted..
You can imagine the number of bandages it takes to finish the game...

After the game is finished players, tourists and krpaš fans stay on the street enjoying the food and local wine, singing and dancing on the street till dawn...

The point of the game - keep the doctor busy
Photos from previous years as a decoration of the Krpaš-field...

2013 - after the match; the street turns to music, food, drinks and laughter....

World of book

Whatever you may need to know, our local tourist office is here to help. Facts, figures, community information, local history, your rights and much more… just ask!

If you are a reading fan welcome to the our world of book! Our, small but interesting, international library has plenty headings in different languages. For a perfect and relaxing afternoon all you need is  a book, a glass of refreshing drink and a bit of space under a pine tree.

Library works at the exchange principle –  you bring the book you no longer need and choose one from the ones we’ve got. Take one – leave one. That’s it! The point is that this way we always have fresh reading  here.  If you do not have a book for exchange, it’s not a problem – you can still borrow it.  It’s free of charge.

Battle of Marina

You might find odd the fact that in the first part of the story about Battle of Marina I chose a lady to tell the story, but for the locals in Marina (Bossiglina at the time), Katarina (Kate) Despotova is a real hero. Something like Joan of Arc for the French. It is somewhat a brutal story, but it has to be told.

A Story of brave women of Bossoglina

June 26th 1657.
My name is Katarina Despotova, I am a young widow from Bossiglina. My husband was killed by the Ottomans along with many other brave men of our village. There are few of us left alive now and this is a day when a woman cannot act as one.  That is why I am, along with thirty other woman, wearing mens clothes, a sabre and acting like a man.
Our fortress has been under siege for days now. We are hungry and filthy and tired. There are screams, blood and death at every corner. I have no time for tears, but some do run down my cheeks as I see them breaking into the Tower full of women and children. And then, a huge blast! My brave friend and companion Jele Marunova, a young girl dedicated to God, blew three barrels of gun powder and sent all the souls from the fortress to heaven. Some to God, some to Allah; none survived.
I am not afraid, I am not sad, I am not horrified. I was born to be at this place at this time. I have lived this short life to fight this battle and avenge my beloved husband. I was born to kill six Ottoman soldiers with a sabre before being captured.
I have the pleasure of seeing the shame in Ahmed-pasha’s eyes while he takes our hats off and realizes that his soldiers were fighting and being killed by the woman of my village. I have the pleasure to see them scared as they  take  us to slavery in Bosnia. A small group of women, heavily guarded by men armed with guns and sabres.
They’ve made us slaves and no one will ever know our end. But you can bet that a woman form Bossiglina knows how to make an exit. And it never is a quiet one ;)

NARROW STREETS OF COBBLESTONE

Whichever village you choose to visit on your tours trough our county, do not miss to check out the old part of the place. I bet you'll be amazed by its architecture!
The size of the houses makes you wonder if this is actually the Lilliput land from Guliver travels and the stone walls made with absolutely no mortar still stand after all these centuries...

 Houses in Najevi village...

Once upon of time water was collected in wells and woman brought it home in small barrels... They carried it on their heads sometimes for kilometers... Washing up after luch took some time, huh?

Village well in Marina...

Some of the old streets are still covered in cobblestone... Definitly not a place to wear high heels...
Street covered in cobblestone in Blizna...

With new houses being built, I guess in a couple of years you won't get a chance to see these any more so hurry if you wish to see them...

WHY EASTER IN MARINA

Easter holidays always come as a nice introduction into the “outdoor time of year".  After  a couple of cosy months on a sofa, you just can't help longing for the outside activities.

      Sailing
This is the perfect time of year for true sailing lovers. Excellent winds can carry you as far from the coast as you like, yet there are no summer crowds at sea. If you do not own a sailing yacht, you can rent one out from one of the charters in marina Agana: http://www.moorings.com/vacation-options/bareboat-yacht-charter/destinations/mediterranean/croatia/agana  or http://www.pitter-yachting.com/en/

Walking
Nearby area offers great possibilities for walking tours. Hills not too steep, hidden bays and small coves, nature in bloom... There’s plenty to see here and now’s just the time.

Cycling
If you prefer to cycle round the area you are visiting, we are very happy to say that a lot of the routes have been repaired and improved during the last couple of months. We hope you’ll like it.

      Gastronomy
Spit roasted lamb with spring onions and green lettuce, lamb and peas stew, lamb under iron bell, lamb,   lamb, lamb… Spring is the time of year to try these and many more delicious lamb recipes in one of the local taverns.

KONOBA "KOD DUJE" / TAVERN "KOD DUJE"

In any country I visit, I just love to eat in those little places  where you can taste the local food and the best (red :D) wine. When all this is combined with friendly staff, interesting decor and a relaxed atmosphere, you just can't resist it.

Tavern "Kod Duje" is just such a place; the locals as well as tourists love it. Earlier this month, after the winter break, this family run tavern re-opened its doors. Enjoy it!

KAD BI MASLINA MOGLA PRIČATI/ IF OLIVE TREE COULD ONLY TALK

Priče o ljubavi, životu, pjesmi i radu.
Postoji plan da se masline na ovom području posebno označe i zaštite od devastacije i iskreno se nadam da će ova stabla pričati svoju priču još dugo, dugo….

Deep respect… I really do not know is there a better word to describe what a person feels when you meet something that's been alive for over a 1000 years. A being so old that it can tell you a story of the royal sculptor Ivan Duknović and his very first arts made in famous stone from local quarries. Stories of the brave locals who fought the Osmans and all the other invaders who wanted to take a part of this heaven. Stories of love, life, poems and hard work.
There is a plan to protect and care for these ancient trees and I sincerely hope that their stories will be told to many future generations …
